Growing Green – An Initiative in Organic Farming
With an aim to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness among students, Jubilee Hills Public School – Rampally, initiated an organic farming project within the school campus. This initiative seeks to introduce students to the concepts and benefits of organic farming, while encouraging hands-on learning experience.
The project also aims to foster a sense of responsibility among students towards nature and promote sustainable living practices. Additionally, it seeks to cultivate chemical-free vegetables and herbs that could be used in the school kitchen, thereby reinforcing the importance of healthy and eco-friendly food choices.
A piece of land near the playground is designated for this purpose. The soil is enriched with natural compost prepared from kitchen waste and dry leaves. Students actively participate in the preparation of soil beds, sowing of seeds, watering and weeding which enhance their gross motor skills and physical coordination.
As part of its 90th anniversary celebrations, the Reserve Bank of India launched a pilot initiative by planting 90 saplings in the school’s organic farm. This programme was launched by the RBI Regional Director, Sri Kamal.P.Patnaik on 29th August, 2024. He also administered the oath to save trees and promote sustainable practices and environmental awareness among students.
Vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, brinjals, carrots and herbs like coriander and mint are grown here. These crops are selected based on seasonal suitability and ease of cultivation.
The organic farming project has proved to be a rewarding experience, offering valuable learning opportunities for students while positively influencing the school environment. Encouraged by its success, the school intends to expand the initiative in the coming years and incorporate it more deeply into the academic curriculum.
